    Those beard type things are spanish moss, which isn’t really moss and not spanish. It’s related to the pineapple and is an aerophyte with no root system. There are all sorts of stories as to where the name came from; most are silly, but it’s probably from the fact that the conquistadors were some of the first europeans to see the plant.
